More notes on brain structure

Some more notes on the brain from "mindopen0mg"

1 - The brain stem in reptiles

2 - The Limbic sys. in mammals -- as the seat of emotions.

It consists of the hypothalamus, the amygdala, as the "gut" (the id), and the the hippocampus, as the seat of memory.

In relation to this, the "Flashbulb response" stores context of fear ("Fire together wire together"). A good example is the associations with the clear sky on 911. Also relevant: one can remember up 7 digits in short term memory.

3 - Neocortex only in primates -- as the seat of reason.

The Frontal Cortex as seat of thought, neocortex as ego. (Broca and Wernicke's area are in the frontal cortex.)
