I read the recent op-ed by Nobel Laureate Phil Sharp with great
interest. He calls for an increase in funding for agricultural
research, mostly to increase crop yields. I wonder, however, whether
we really want such an increase in this age of obesity -- with too
many calories being one of our major national problems. It is in a
sense ironic to see one of our pre-eminent medical researchers calling
for this increase in food production technology in the face of such a
great national medical problem.
