I read the recent article on the harried daily life of a middle
manager in a representative American company with great amusement.
The article discusses the importance of middle managers collaborating
laterally and working across departments to ensure smooth functioning
in the organization. In connection with this it is worthwhile noting
that scientists studying molecular regulatory networks have been able
to measure quantitatively the importance of communication in the
middle level of a hierarchy and see how this communication eases
information flow bottlenecks in the overall regulatory system.
